Etiquette: Do I say partner or boyfriend?

Hi,Straight female here but I have a question: when I am being introduced to gay couples it's always "Meet X and his partner Y".When people introduce straight couples they say boyfriend or husband.Why is it always partner and not boyfriend or husband with gay couples?Is it impolite of me to say "X and his boyfriend Y?"
