Understandings PrEP Medication?

I've been reading a little bit about this pill you're supposed to take everyday to prevent HIV (assuming you are sexually active), called PrEP. So basically (clarify my understanding) from what I've read, it's kinda the HIV/AIDS equivalent to birth control medication? I know it's a weird analogy, but I think it's a way that I've come to understand what it is.
