Considering moving to Montreal. What is gay life like if my French isn't great yet?

I'm looking to transfer to Concordia's business school. I'm from Edmonton. Is French crucially needed to explore Montreal ? I know a bit of French(albeit imperfect). I studied it all throughout junior high and Highschool. I'm also planning to get a job at a cafe in the French quarter of my city once school is out to sharpen my listening skills.
