Need help educating an ignorant friend

So... for starters, I'm a male 26-year-old, I live in Chapel Hill, NC (a bubble of liberalism in a desert of redneck-ness). My ex-girlfriend (who I'm still buddies with) is, I'm afraid, terribly ignorant about many social issues of today. Just tonight, we got in an argument over whether or not she is prejudiced and/or homophobic. Apparently, in her mind, things have progressed to the point where homosexuals are treated as equals and that "nobody cares if you're gay anymore." (We are lucky enough to live in an area where this is actually pretty close to the case).I tried to explain to her that the life of a gay person in 2016 is still far more difficult than it needs to be. It's a shame, and although gay rights have made tremendous strides recently, there's still a massive stigma (to many) surrounding homosexuality, hate crimes, anti-LGBTQ organizations, etc.So, what was I'm actually looking for from y'all is links to articles about recent unfair treatment of homosexuals, stories involving the unfair treatment of homosexuals and... well shit, why not some personal stories of being discriminated against because of your sexual preference (that being said, I'd really like for this thread to not become a shit-show of anecdotal horror stories - my aim here is really just to show my friend that simply because it's 2016 and gay marriage is legal does NOT mean that being a gay person in this country has magically become a walk in the park). As a straight white male, I really have no idea what it's like to deal with these issues. So please! Share some resources so that I may hopefully pass them to on to my good-hearted yet unfortunately ignorant friend. Thanks!edit: formatting
