Do you like/dislike the Beastie Boys?

I'm writing up a birthday card for a gay colleague in the legal profession (who is hosting an 80's themed party), and I thought it would by funny to draft a legal letter stating something like, "Pursuant to the laws recommended by Mike D, MCA and Ad-Rock, you are obliged to fight for your right to party", etc...Someone then told me it might not be a great idea as the Beastie Boys were a bit homophobic in the past. I read that they apologised to the LGBT community in the 90's, but just wanted to get your opinions on if you'd think referencing them might be offensive (or bring back bad memories?).
