Hello everyone,
It's my first post to /r/MensRights, so please be gentle, especially considering that I am putting forth un-finished thoughts in order to spur discussion.
We know that, through out the ages, society has evolved. It has been affected by many, many advances in knowledge, technology, education, nutrition and many, many, too many varied things to list here.
A few examples that are pertinent to this discussion:
The use of surnames, linked to the father, to denote lineage (aka: Family name) is a relatively new invention. Dis-use of the matriname even though, as the link shows, matrinames have been in use for much longer than patrinames names -- back to 1600 BCE. Side note: Please, lets not give credence to the myth of the matriarchal prehistory
The evolution of marriage into what we have today, regardless of your location.
The evolution of paternity rights
The evolution of dating rituals. I'm not particularly, super happy with this article, so feel free to comment with better.
The evolution of monogamy in society.
The evolution of spousal support.
So, the point is made; Society is evolving and continues to evolve.
My thoughts on the subject revolve around the idea of "truth" -- should it even exist (can debate another time) -- and if society is evolving toward a more "truthful" state where it more accurately reflects human nature and our inclinations as a species.
Are the things that "make sense" to us as a society in whole, leading the path toward exposing our own true human nature?
Now, I know that many of you are looking at the question above, and thinking, "What the fuck!? I hope that this isn't the path that things are taking!! This is fucked up." And I agree, however, the thing to keep in mind is that evolution often happens as the pendulum swings -- an extreme position is corrected by over-compensation. The same as over-steering to fix a spin out in our vehicle, we have to learn to not over-compensate. I believe that laws are rarely viewed in this light, but I would argue that what we see happening in colleges with these rape tribunals, in California with "Yes means yes" and other similar actions are, quite possibly, just over-compensatory. When put on a 500 year time scale, they will even out.
Please note: That does not mean that we can quit fighting against the over-compensation. The pendulum demands that we fight its swing, lest there be no gravity to pull it back.
A few starter questions for the community:
Is it possible that society is evolving toward the dissolution of marriage? Marriage was, at one point, very necessary. That is no longer true. Is marriage an artifact of a lost time? Will it evolve to become something useful in another sense, or continue down it's path of, increasingly, undesirable? How could it be more useful in today's society?
We see the idea of monogamy becoming weaker. Has it outlived it's usefulness? One of the main causes for societal monogamy today are STDs. What would happen if STDs were eliminated from the planet?
While paternity laws are still fucked up in the vast majority of the world, they are better than when a man had no legal rights. Do you see things, on the whole (keeping in mind laws from 50 years ago), moving toward more equality?
Do you think that society is evolving, especially in the areas of MRA concern, toward more of a realistic view of who we are as a species? Hell, do you believe that society even evolves in that direction, period?
What can we take away from this viewpoint to help us in our every day struggles?
TL;DR Is society evolving toward a more "true" reflection of human nature in regards to MRA issues, albeit, in a way that mirrors the swing of a pendulum?
Edit: A few tyops.
