OK, full disclosure: I just created this account to post this. I've been lurking on reddit for a while, and this is the first thing that made me want to create an account. Also, I should probably state that I'm a straight guy, so I don't know how much of a right I have discussing what is obviously a huge moment for the LGBT community but, well, here we are.
I've been a huge fan of the Avatar franchise for a while, and an avid, if fairly recent, Korrasami shipper, so I was hyped as hell when the ship was officially made canon. However, something I noticed is that most of the art (both written and drawn) depict Korra and Asami either well into their relationship or giving zero fucks about anyone knowing they're totally gay for each other, which really, isn't a problem in and of itself. Still, from what I've heard from my own LGBT friends, as well as stories I've heard on the internet, coming out, even to yourself can be a scary thing. Hell, professing your love to a long-time friend is terrifying no matter your sexual orientation. So while I certainly enjoy seeing two attractive ladies all over each other in this subreddit, I don't think that's how their romantic relationship would start out, and since I fancy myself a bit of a writer, I thought I'd give my own take on it (For the purpose of this fic I'm assuming that a) as Bryke mentioned, their romantic involvement started in during their vacation, and b) that Republic City is basically modern-day NYC or San Francisco in regards to LGBT acceptance).
"Excuse me, Tenzin. Varrick was looking for you. Something about wanting to borrow a glider suit to fly of the tower?"
A familiar look of panic crossed Tenzin's face. "That doesn't seem like a good idea!" He took off running.
Korra turned to look at Asami and smiled. "You wanna sit with me for a minute? I'm not ready to get back to the party just yet."
Asami sat next to Korra, who suddenly had a more somber expression on her face. "I don't think I ever really apologized."
"For what?"
"For being gone all that time. For not coming back sooner."
"You don't need to apologize for anything. I'm just so happy you're here now. I don't think I could've handled losing you and my father on the same day." As she said this, Asami realized, perhaps for the first time, how true this was. Her father's death had been devastating but losing Korra...it was almost unthinkable. She fought to hold back tears as Korra pulled her into a hug.
"I am so sorry about what happened."
"Thank you. I'm just glad I was able to forgive him."
"So, what now? Back to the dance floor?"
"I'm kind of all danced out. Honestly, after everything that happened the past few months, I could use a vacation."
Korra thought for a moment. A vacation sounded perfect just about now, and it would be great to spend more time with her best friend after three years apart. "Let's do it! Let's go on a vacation, just the two of us. Anywhere you want."
"Really? Okay...I've always wanted to see what the spirit world's like."
"Sounds perfect..."
The next morning Korra and Asami set out towards the spirit portal. Almost by instinct Korra found herself reaching for Asami's hand and taking it in hers. As they entered the portal both women turned towards each other and as Korra looked into Asami's eyes she felt a flood of emotion.
Asami. Her closest fiend. Someone who had saved her life more than once. Hell, she saved more than her life, Korra realized. She saved her sanity and her soul while she was recovering in the south pole. If it hadn't been for those letters she wrote to Asami she wouldn't have made it. Asami had been Korra's rock all these years and she didn't even know it.
Korra suddenly recognized those powerful emotions she was feeling. They were similar to what she felt so long ago for Mako. However, this felt...different, somehow. Deeper. Stronger. She closed her eyes and leaned in, not knowing what to expect, but hoping...a hope that was answered when she felt Asami's lips against hers.
Korra opened her eyes and found herself still holding Asami's hands but now they were standing in the middle of a meadow. After a few seconds she finally found her voice.
"I, um...wow."
"Are you all right?" Asami asked.
"Yeah, it's just...I think I've wanted to do that for a while. I just never noticed until now."
"I...I love you, Korra. More than I think I've ever loved anyone in my life."
"I love you too, Asami." Korra cupped her Asami's face in her hands and gave her a long, passionate kiss.
After a several blissful, endless moments, they separated. "So are you sure you'll be okay being the avatar's arm candy?" Korra asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh, please. If anyone's the trophy girlfriend in this relationship, it's you. How many CEO's do you think can claim they can make out with the avatar?"
"Girlfriend?"
"Well, yeah. What would you call it?"
"I don't know. I like how it sounds, though." Korra put her arm around Asami's waist.
"You know people are gonna talk, right?"
"Let them. Right at this moment I couldn't care less."
Together, Korra and Asami set out to explore the spirit world.
