Cher's connection to the LGBT community

I've noticed in Rupaul's Drag Race that Cher has often been brought up in conversation and put on a pedestal. I only came out not too long ago and don't know much a lot about the LGBT community and for me I think it's important that I educate myself about LGBT related matters as much as I can.So on that note would somebody kind explaining to me Cher's significance in the LGBT community?I apologise if this is a stupid question any explanation no matter how short or long would be much appreciated <3
