Who pays on a first date between two males?

I had an awkward moment a while ago on a date, we're both male, and we didn't know how to pay.It's traditional for the man to pay when he's on a date with a woman, but what about two men?He wanted to pay for the whole meal, I wanted to pay, I suggested that we split the bill but he insisted on paying. I felt really uncomfortable, and I'm not sure why?
