Being attracted to those who appear straight...

I don't know if this topic has been posed on yet, so if it is please direct me to it. Anyways, I have a slight dilemma and I don't know how to go about it. I am a gay male who is not masculine, yet at the same time I am not feminine (and I hate using that word because it is demeaning). I am attracted to guys who on the outside appear straight (think jocks, but not massively muscular - more of a toned look). My gaydar is really hit-and-miss and not even alcohol can convince me to talk to guys who I think are attractive out of fear of embarrassment. Thoughts on how to identify the right guys to talk to and how to get out of an embarrassing situation where the guy ends up not being gay?ps. I currently go to university in a fairly conservative, rural area (we have a cow pasture next to the parking lots on campus). The student body is somewhat open-minded but every once in a while you run into the homophobic a-holes.
