How do I raise my kids to be comfortable with who they are?
I'm a dad. My wife and I have two young kids, a son and a daughter. We live in an area that (from my perspective as a straight person) seems relatively inclusive of LGBT people. We're part of a church that's open to inclusion of LGBT people in the full life of the church. They have friends who have gay parents. My kids see that their dad's best friend is gay. But, I've had a number of friends over the years who tell personal stories of feeling ashamed when they were young, hiding this important detail about themselves from friends and family. Recently, a friend I made through Reddit told me about coming out to her mom as a teenager. I want to do a better job for my kids. So, my question is, what else can I do as a parent to help them to grow up and feel comfortable if they happen to be gay or bisexual?
