Giving a male date flowers?

This weekend, I'm going to spend a weekend with a guy I met online and have been talking to since the beginning of the summer. He's about 3 hours away.I want to surprise him with flowers, BUT I don't know what the standard protocol is for giving flowers to a guy, and I don't want to ask him if he'd be ok with it for fear of ruining the surprise. Advice?
