What should I do with this guy I met online?

Long story short: I met a guy 3 or 4 weeks ago and we are both gay (he send me a message via grindr). I immediately fell in love with him but apparently I'm not his type and the first time we met he didn't feel "it". And he told me that the next day. Also I told him that I was going to France for a couple of month for my studies but visiting home already after a month. We met again and he nearly said to a friend of him we casually met that we were on a date but corrected himself that he was only with a friend. I was confused and the next day I asked him about that and he reassured me that he only sees me as a friend. I was heartbroken, but I told him that I really liked him in this conversation. We didn't text for 1,5 weeks and I already am in France. I texted him two days ago to give him my new frenchund number and I tried to keep the conversation going. Yesterday he told me that he started to see another guy, but isn't that sure if it would work out. Heartbroken again. I told him, as a friend, that maybe it just needs more time for him to like this new guy. While I tried to give an advice, I still wanted to be the one with whom he would fall in love with and I am hoping that it won't work out with that other guy he is seeing. I told him that I wanted to meet him when I visit home and he said that would be okay (although he didn't seem that convinced), but only if it wouldn't be a date. And while I'm in France I feel like crying and vomiting and I can't think clearly. So, tell me Reddit: Was I acting like a good friend? Or am I acting like a hippocryte (did I spell that right)? is there any chance that we could end up as a couple even if it takes a lot longer because of France? Or something else? I can't think clearly, but I would be grateful for any advice.
