I dont know my crushes sexuality, what do I do!?

So I am a gay man that just started college and there is a guy in my tutor group who i find very, very attractive. i really want to start speaking to him over text and maybe seeing if anything can go further, but i am not sure of his sexuality. i was talking to my friends and apparently a lot of people think he could be gay/bisexual as he has never dated a girl but sometimes flirts and has apparently given hints to liking boys. i really wanna try it out and see how it goes but i'm scared of the outcome especially when i've just started college i don't wanna make anything awkward. so what do you think? should i just try and start chatting and risk him being straight or do i just avoid? i really like him.any help would be appreciated, thank you.
