Why the hundreds of different genders?

Why do people feel the need to pigeon-hole themselves? The concept itself is what causes all this "you misgendered me" crap. How about instead of identifying as "non binary" or "demi boy" or some other nonsensical bullshit, people identify as THEMSELVES! Everyone can fuck who they want and be whoever they want.So can someone kindly explain to me the function of gender?
