Need to break habit of calling other men "honey"

I have a horrible (but well intentioned) habit of calling other men my age "honey" that comes from a lot of my formative years spent in gay male circles where that's affectionate/complimentary/the norm. Whenever I'm in a good mood or trying to be nice that word just comes out of my mouth without me even thinking about it. I've accidentally pissed off and insulted more than one guy by calling him this. I need to practice saying "hey buddy." in front of the mirror so I don't get punched in the teeth one of these days. Anyone else have this problem? Social anxiety has me worried about it. I feel bad for offending those guys! And also perplexed by why it's so offensive to be called it.
