Is there such a thing as too attractive?

At what point do a guy's looks become too intimidating to approach him? Or do you assume it's his responsibility to do the approaching? I've never really noticed this in the straight world: men have no problem approaching women regardless of how beautiful they are (I guess with some exceptions), but one of my gay friends seems to be dealing with this. He's admitted to me men have told him that his looks are intimidating. This is just such a strange concept to me. What do you think it's all about?
