My friend [19M] is struggling with finding out if his crush is gay?

My friend, let's call him Tom, has been talking to a guy since last semester at our university. They are friends so far, but Tom wants to be more than friends. Unfortunately he has no polite way to ask if his friend likes him back/is also gay.How should my guy friend confess his love to his crush??
