Advice needed for complicated date

Hi everybody!I really need some dating advice. A few months ago I went on a date with a guy. The date went just perfect and it seemed like we were hitting it off really well. But due to certain circumstances we weren’t able to see each other for a month. During that month we messaged sometimes, but I noticed something being wrong. After a month I messaged him if he wanted to meet up again and then he suddenly send me a big message explaining to me that he thought I was a real fun guy but that he had a relationship in the beginning of the year and that he wasn’t over this break-up. So that ended with kind of a bummer… But now, a few months later, we started seeing each other again (out of the dating context) and it’s really nice. I think he likes me as well because he messages me to go do stuff together.But the thing is that I don’t know if he’s looking for a good friendship or more… And I don’t know how to act because of that message he send me that time ago. I feel like I’m not the one who can make the move.. I just don't know his intentions and I don’t want to make things awkward because I want to stay friends at the very least.Do you guys have any advice for this situation?
