The 'pride' in "gay pride (parade)"

No matter how lovely and festive they can be, I don't get the pride part. But I also don't really get pride in general.So what is there to be proud of? It sounds a bit silly. I guess it's all and only about pushing back against the negative, which is of course great, but just in case it isn't (I've seen some left-handed people sincerely saying they were literally proud to be left-handed, because some very smart or otherwise gifted people were left-handed... so, yeah, you never know), I was wondering why.Sorry for the excessive text. I'm quite a bit tired and I type/talk more then. Thanks for your understanding :3
