Gay son leaving

My 17 year old son came out as gay to my wife and I when he was 13. We love him and accept him. He is a senior in high school and looking at going to college. He is looking at two colleges. My son, though out and open does not push his sexual orientation even though he is effeminate and dresses nice and hangs out with girls. Anyway, even though he has not faced much in way of hateful and hurtful comments like others I still worry about him. Once he leave the home I sometimes wonder if he will be hated for holding another man's hand or kissing or just being himself. Am I making this into a bigger issue? Oh, both colleges are gay friendly and one is in the top 50 in the US in the gay pride index. Any dads of gay sons or young gay men in college or whomever.
