Please explain coming out to me

I just never understood it. Why is it something I'd have to confess like I just committed a crime? Why is it relevant to anyone other than the person I'm with who I'm attracted to? Am I missing something? People keep saying I'm not really gay unless I've properly come out, so I assume I missed some factor of coming out.
