Does anyone else use "self-deprecating" gay jokes to ease into coming out?

I'm in the final year of high school and haven't come out beyond my close friends. I find jokes have been my way of hinting that I'm not completely straight, without outright saying it. For example, somehow the teacher got onto the subject of how the ancient Greeks saw gay sex as a team bonding exercise. To which I said "Sport's not nearly as interesting any more." or something similar. I don't know what the intention of this is, because I don't think it is to come out. It's almost just to show that I'm not insecure about my sexuality, but I'm not quite sure. Is this a common thing, or am I the lone weirdo?
