He is in denial about his sexuality

so, i had that kind of crush on this guy that used to study with me in last two years, and past 10 days i was on grindr and by accident i find him there, i couldn't contacted him first, but after couples of days i sent him a msg on FB account and he was happy to talk to me, according to him, we agreed to go out for a coffee this saturday, and it went very well, after i comeback home i sent him a msg telling him about my crush thing, he said that he is not gay but still he want to be a friend with me. i really don't know what happened, is he denying his sexuality or just politely refused me ..... someone can explain that tragedy?
