Networking for a 20-something gay

Hey, I'm gay and don't have a very strong group of close gay friends. I've been trying to cultivate a network for a while, but it's just not working. I have one or two good gay friends but not a close-knit group like some other gay guys I know do. Why is it so difficult? Some help, guidance or tips would be great...
