Friend Zone, Getting out of it... Help?

Long story short... recently gotten in touch with an old friend from school after 5 years apart and we've been hanging out recently with friends (cinema, group friends get together), I know for a fact that he only sees me as a 'friend'... Though I've had a crush on him since school and I've been dying to ask him out (just to chance it)... I'm I confusing great friendship and wanting to date him, since his also my only gay friend... Help???
