"Queer" or "gay"? Why?
I'm gay. I'm not queer."Queer" was a homophobic insult everywhere in the English-speaking world. "Queer" meant strange, but with an overtone of wrong. Back in the 40's and 50's and 60's, effeminate men were considered "queer" - because they were wrong. And I'm not "queer". Ain't nothin' wrong about me!These days, the reclaimed version of "queer" includes everyone who isn't straight and even some people who are straight! It's so vague as to be totally meaningless. If I say I'm queer, I could be anything - intersex, transgendered, bisexual, even just an straight man who once kissed a boy and didn't hate it. Meanwhile, I'm actually a cisgendered man who is sexually attracted to other men. I'm gay. I'm the "G" in "LGBT". But I don't see myself represented in "queer". That's not me.What are you? Queer? Gay? Or something else? What resonates for you? What do you identify with? Why?
