Will Republicans anti gay past hurt them among gay voters forever?

Democrats used to be the racist party supporting sIavery, segregation and the K.K.k while Republicans freed the slaves, passed the civil rights/voting rights act and brought the KKK to justice. Some time during the 20th century they flipped on race. Now Democrats are pro minority and consistently been winning non white votes for decades while Republicans have become the white nationalist party. It seems like black voters have all but forgot the Democrat party's racist history. Do you think its possible for a similar shift to happen with the gay vote? Where Republicans surpass Democrats on gay rights winning the gay vote and Democrats reverse by appealing to anti gay bigots?
