Text your ex?

So next week I’ll be visiting the city of my first boyfriend ever. After the break up (4-5 years ago) we didn’t text each other at all until one day I got inboxed by him on instagram as I was working abroad in Germany for a few months. Just some casual chitchat. So the question now is: should I text him and tell I will be visiting his city for a couple of days and if he wants we could meet to grab a coffee or something? Or is it awkward? Should I leave the past in the past?
