TLDR: An experiment on how riot handles player toxicity in game reveals very subpar/poor involvement in actually making the community better. I DO NOT accuse them of being a bad company, and I want it to be clear I still love the game itself and wish to continue to support it. Excuse the poor grammar and spelling.<3
Let me start off by saying I am NOT a beacon of light in the world of LOL. I have been punished for my own actions and take full responsibility for my in game behavior, but as a supporter of this game since 2010 and as a genuine lover of the game and its style of play, I wanted to give back to you guys, the people like myself, who want to play to have fun and have a good experience. It is in my own opinion that RIOT does not care (to some extent) for the vast majority of its player base, and I believe this experiment sheds a little light on how the regular, average player, is treated. AGAIN, I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY OWN TOXIC BEHAVIOR AND THIS THREAD IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A WHINY CIRCLE JERK AGAINST RIOT. IT IS HERE TO PROVIDE INSIGHT FOR THE AVERAGE PLAYER AND THOSE NEW PLAYERS WHO WISH TO HAVE A HEADS UP ABOUT THE COMMUNITY AND HOW RIOT HANDLES THE SITUATION.
I have been conducting this experiment for a little over the last 6 months or so on various accounts and various email accounts as to keep my reports and tickets weighted, in what I can only assume, a stable amount of effectiveness.
Variables: 100+ games (around 30% having negative behavioral experiences) Reports ONLY for excessive abuse (racial, gay slurs AND/OR excessive flaming with extreme language. Understandable frustration was considered (everyone has bad games every now and then)). Reports on intentional feeding when the summoner has stated he/she was doing so in game (and pregame) via chat. AFK in amounts over 10 mins where players did not attempt to reconnect. Pregame/Endgame chat with screen shots/videos sent via email on the LOL support ticket site.
My research into the situation led me to believe that the overall support provided by the "behavior specialists" was kept at a minimum, with a VERY large amount of auto-responses sent back via email by these "behavior specialists". Around 50 support tickets were created on top of in game reports to support the report system and to "insure" that action was being taken on the players involved. Keep in mind that RIOT has stated that they will not give proof of ANY action taken on the players reported as stated in their email responses, here is an example of the auto response sent EVERY SINGLE TIME:
"Hello Summoner,
We will investigate your report and take any actions we feel are necessary. Please keep in mind; we cannot disclose any disciplinary actions that may be taken due to privacy reasons.
Even if you were unable to use the report feature, please continue to use our in-game reporting system whenever you can. Reports you make provide us with valuable tracking information and help to escalate players to our attention for investigation. Each report brings violators of the Summoner's Code one step closer to restricted chat or suspension by our investigative audits.
Thank you for your patience and for taking time out of your day to send us this report. It is our goal to continue working towards making experiences on the Fields of Justice fair and fun for all Summoners!
Please let me know if you have any additional feedback or concerns."
After the emails were sent, a very large majority of the cases were then closed, even after contacting them back. They offered no more insight to the case and did not ask any further questions on the incidents. I was VERY surprised by this as RIOT makes it seem like its very important to them to get more insight to these matters in hopes of actually fixing the situation. As of right now, I really do not believe this matter is being given a VERY justified amount of attention as most of the attention is going to Esports and the LCS (which I very much enjoy and watch regularly). Out of all the times I have been banned and chat restricted (on all my side accounts I conducted the experiment on) I was rarely addressed by riot staff or the specialists. This shows that very little actual involvement goes past the judgement phase. What we are seeing is a very skimmed approach to actually fixing the behavior problem in LOL.
I will not be posting any caps or videos in this thread as I do not wish to bring any player or specialist under fire, again this was done just to raise awareness in hopes that YOU will light a fire and help make the community a better place. For me, it is very frustrating and very hard to justify playing this game when the situation is this out of hand. I consider myself to be very thick skinned so its easy for me to look the other way when players are frustrated and take their anger out on their teammates, but for newer players or younger players that might not be as thick skinned as myself this could be very scarring and emotionally damaging for them. The internet will be the internet (boys will be boys mentality) but I think we can all agree that this is something that needs to be handled better. If you have had similar experiences feel free to comment below and we can discuss it further.
I want to see this game grow in a positive direction, not fade or turn into a mockery of what it was. I used to have alot of fun playing this game, but now I feel like im more interested and motivated by the dark side of it all instead of the good, and that is NOT something you want your game to be about. Thanks for listening.
