Often, we say that women only seek an echo chamber with the women they surround themselves with to confirm what they already believe. It got me to thinking, is that what I’m doing with this community? It certainly has never felt like that – TRP principles have always screamed nothing but truth to me – but to be safe I ventured out and studied /r/TwoXChromosomes. As we say, it’s important to judge women by their actions and not by their words, so I decided to look at their top posts of all time to determine what was most important to them. I began to see some patterns.
I’ve thought about writing my findings for a while but what really got me is the completely true story made up bull shit over at 2xc that was posted today, when the author described TRP:
For those of you who don't know what that is, it's basically a huge collection of sexist neckbeards on Reddit who probably recently were hurt by a woman so now they all have personal vendettas against them and mask their misogyny by attempting to justify the way they act and treat women and claim we want the "alpha" stereotype and no woman is loyal, you must "train" a woman to bend to your will. So please don't go there, you will cry.
I could say that 2xc is full of whiny cunts who can rationalize anything if it’s convenient for them. But that would be an unfair generalization; no, let’s take a look for ourselves and see what they’re really all about.
RESULTS
I found that almost every top post fell neatly into one of the following categories. I only included the top fifty but the pattern continues on. Archived links for these posts are included here and here. Note that I only categorized each post once, though a lot of the karma whoring / shit posts were really just stories about themselves and a lot of the everything was derogatory towards men.
40% Shit posting / karma whoring – Top posts 2, 7, 8, 10, 12, 17, 19, 20, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 35, 36, 39, 42, 45, 46, 50. Includes: inflammatory clickbait, stories of themselves or famous women, anything from buzzfeed, simple things most people would agree on (interracial and gay marriage is A-okay), and anything irrelevant or blatantly fishing for attention (look at this picture of me and my friends teehee!!)
22% Gender roles / demonizing men – Top posts 1, 5, 6, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 38, 43, 44. Includes: stories of men being shitty (e.g. rape, harassment, catcalling), stories about women taking on traditionally masculine roles, men being more feminine, and some same-sex marriage news.
22% Maternity / Abortion / Contraception / Menstruation – Top posts 3, 4, 15, 22, 24, 27, 34, 41, 47, 48, 49. The header for this section is pretty self explanatory. Anything about maternity leave, abortion rights, federal funding of contraception and a surprising amount of menstruation complaining.
8% Body acceptance – Top posts 23, 25, 37, 40. Essentially just complaints about traditional definitions of beauty.
8% Personal stories - Top posts 13, 21, 31, 33. Note these are self-posts only; a lot of other personal stories are in the karma whoring category.
ANALYSIS - WHAT CAN WE LEARN?
No critical thinking. What really surprised me is that I saw practically nothing that I disagreed with. Everything is seemingly fine and well. I can agree that birth control is a good thing for everyone, that people in third world countries should have access to good sanitation, that women should be allowed to have abortions, that people who rape are shitty, that women don’t have to live up to any expectation they don’t want to (e.g. being thin or pretty). But you know what got me? It’s that they had no critical thinking. In order to argue something, you have to choose a topic that has multiple sides. I saw none of this on 2xc. It was just a giant chamber of women saying things that either made them feel good or made the community feel good thus garnering karma for the original poster. There was nothing inherently debatable, controversial, or fresh, unlike our posts here.
Victim mentality. Women are raped. Women make less than men. Women are evaluated based on how they look. Women are stopped by men from getting abortions or federally funded birth control. It’s society’s fault that they have to work hard to look pretty or be successful or be accepted by their peers.
Their goal is equality through androgyny. There were a lot of stories praising how a girl’s man was cooking or baking or being emotional. There were a lot of stories and articles showcasing how a woman was raped or harassed on the street. There wasn't a single story speaking positively of masculinity. What purpose does this server? It demonizes men. Equal pay and legal rights aren't enough for women. They want to destroy male sexuality as a whole. They want equality through men being less masculine and women being less feminine.
They rely heavily on the support and validation of other women. Think back to the struggles you've faced in your life and the victories you've won. If you’re like me, when you were younger, you whined a lot when you had problems but no one really cared beyond the topical “oh that’s too bad,” and what have you. As a man, you face your struggles yourself and decide for yourself how to overcome them. And when you succeed, you don't go telling everyone unless someone was involved in the situation. In stark contrast, women need the support and validation of their community. It’s how they decide what is right and wrong – by seeking the consensus of their social circle and seeing what feels right.
This leads me to the conclusion of why that girl I mentioned earlier made those gross generalizations that many in her community share. It wasn't because she came and evaluated us for herself (that would be far too mentally taxing to evaluate us all alone), it’s simply that the herd has gotten a bad feeling about us and thus we are demonized, not evaluated.
