Gay 4yr old in class. Pause for thought.
I'm a teacher now, in China. There isn't much homophobia here - that turned out to be a quirk of more religious cultures. Great!Anyway, I have a student in my class who I'm 90% sure is gay. It's interesting because he's 4 years old! It's more interesting still because today I'm being asked to write a social profile and it's challenging the labels inside my own head. These labels I've used to change myself. That is, I didn't accept it to myself for a long time but when I did I used the positive aspects of the stereotyping to improve myself a lot - I'm now more social and get on a lot better with women. It's been a massive boost.Obviously it seems like the best thing is to treat someone just the same as you would anyone else but... I'm not sure that's true either. This isn't how we interact with people.I know the kid will have a lot to go through in the future and I want to somehow help equip him.Can anyone relate?
