Confused

So there is this guy I like, and we even ALMOST kissed, our faces was just a few inches away, but we got distracted as we were in public (we live in a conservative country). And before that I always felt like he was flirting with me and hitting on me, he used to make tons of gay jokes about me and him. And even my friends were like he acts like he likes me a lot!And a few days ago, I told him that I like him and he said he doesn't "swing that way".. and idk, I just find it weird.. any thoughts?
