Are the rules for being friends with an ex in the gay community different?

Going through a tough breakup - was dumped almost 2 months ago. Had been together almost a year, first gay relationship but it ultimately wasn't working and we both knew it. Anyway, haven't behaved the best since the breakup, made a lot of the classic mistakes: pleading, being obsessive, texting the whole time and basically allowing the entire relationship to consume me. Now, I'm out of the city for a little while where my ex lives. The white, 20 something gay community is not massive and since the breakup he seems to have made a ton of new friends (he's attractive) is it possible to have a friendship with him after the breakup? Part of me wants to for the sheer fact of expanding my own friend group.
