Gay People are disgusting isn't an opinion- Am I right?

A few days ago, I was in an argument with someone about gay rights and such, and they said Gay people were disgusting. Although I am not gay, my brother is, so obviously I felt deeply offended. Now, some people are saying it's her opinion. To me though, this isn't an opinion. This is homophobic bollocks that is basically hate speech. An opinion is, say, gay marriage shouldn't be allowed. This is obviously total rubbish too, but do you see my point?I just need to know I am not going crazy.
