Advice for asking a guy out?

Now I know this sort of topic has been posted before, but I'm gonna post it anyways so cry.Basically I've been seeing this guy around in my high school for awhile and I like him. I want to ask him out but there's a few things that kind of stop me from doing it.One of which is that I don't know really anything about him. Don't know his name, friends, or basically anything other than he's cute and from what I've seen, has a great personality.And I just don't know how to ask him out. I don't know if I should just walk up to him when he's alone, I'm in the closet so I don't want a lot of prying eyes knowing the fact, and just ask him "Hey random question, but are you gay?"I feel like just asking that is weird and just seems off putting especially if he's in the closet or something cause he could misconstrue it as me playing some sort of joke or social experiment.Okay enough info and rambling so on to the point of this topic, how should I go about trying to ask this guy out?
