Why the terms homophobic, homophobia, and homophobe are bad for the gay community. (Actually these should be split into 2 words) (One for the oppressor of gays and one for the intolerance of gays)
Before you click away please hear me out with an analytical mind. Please don't get immature I will try not to be immature and try to take all emotions out of what I'm saying. I feel that Homophobia is a damaging word and here's why. The gay community and advocates of the gay community have collectively decided that addressing a gay man or woman as a "homo" is unacceptable, commendable and inappropriate. Due to bullying, harassment, and religious superiority complex. Well then why is it inappropriate, impolite, or improper to address people that don't like gays and people that oppress gays as "Homophobes or "Homophobic" that seems to be a destructive word simply because this is the same as addressing a gay person as a homo. HOMOphobic and HOMOphobe both have the root word Homo. Repeating this word will eventually reach children and when children hear "homophobe" or "homophobia" you are delivering to a child's subconscious that it is okay to use the word homo. Think about it. If a kid hears homophobe although it's a different word it still addresses gays as homo. Another reason that this is damaging is that homo according to iucnredlist "is the human genus, which also includes Neanderthals and many other extinct species of hominid" if a 5th grader is learning about this or whenever they teach about homo sapiens they may repeat homo as a joke to bully a gay student because it's an easy target for a quick "joke" meaning the kid thinks it's a joke but it's not funny. Also for the unenlightened individuals that say phobia means something that makes you fear sorta like the fear you get when are on a tall cliff and you're standing on the edge. The unenlightened seem to forget that the second part of the definition of phobia is an irrational aversion to something. My point in saying this is that the unenlightened obviously need to be given an easier time because they can't even look at the definition of phobia to find the second part of the definition. The exact definition is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something." that if we eliminate homo from the vocabulary associated with gays including homosexual and homophobe than we can do something that will help avoid bullying, harassment and intolerance or the gay community has to collectively decide that addressing the gay community as homo is okay.
