Am I Making a Huge Mistake?

So I am fairly naive and new to the world of both gay guys and online dating. So I met a guy on a dating app from another country (we are 10 hours apart). He seems completely legit, and I am REALLY into him. In the back of my mind though there is a small voice telling me that it is a mistake.Do people ever REALLY make super long distance relationships work when facilitated by a dating app? Am I just setting myself up for disappointment? Anyone else out there had any success meeting, dating, and making a life together with a guy from another country?
