Broke up with my 2.5 year boyfriend over the phone. Trying to figure out whats next

So me and my boyfriend were together for the last 2.5 years. Last year I moved to Chicago from LA for work and we were doing the long distance. We saw almost every other month and in fact went on a Europe Trip last month for a week. He is doing his grad school in LA and he has one more year of school left. The plan was he was gonna move to Chicago next year and we will continue long distance for one more year. I got so say it was not a smooth ride after moving to Chicago because he always talked about how he want someone in LA. We were even planning about getting married next year before he moves to Chicago. To my surprise 2 days ago he told he can't do the long distance anymore. I tried to talk to him about 1 more year and we are able to see more often this year, but seems like he doesn't want to continue with this anymore. He also told me that he met "someone" who is caring and listen to him and he is in LA and thats what he wants now! it really breaks my heart and i don't really know what to do. we were together for 2.5 years even exchanged promise ring and it was really a shock for me. so I am going to LA tomorrow to see him and talk to him in person. He told me he is really confused now and he thinks it's difficult and wanted to see that I will support him if he leaves me. I am having second thoughts about going there just because I think its better just to leave this way? At the same time, I feel like I should at least give it a try and see him in person even if it's for the last time. I really don't want to hurt myself.TLdR: Broke up with boyfriend of 2.5 years in which last year was long distance. Should I travel from Chicago to LA to seem him ?
