The Far Right Co-opting Bonhoeffer Against Gays

Over the last few days my evangelical kin sent me a raft of internet links showing Evangelical leaders claiming Bonhoeffer as their personal saint in their struggle with the gay community. Personally I find this claim particularly offensive.Bonhoeffer gave his life to stop the persecution and murder of minorities that DISAGREED with his religion. He was a living breathing incarnation of loving your neighbor and treating your neighbor as you would want to be treated.The current crop of Evangelical leaders are going all out to inflict segregation, discrimination, and persecution upon a minority who disagrees with them. They couldn't be farther from the example of Bonhoeffer if they tried.When you review the pathetic arguments against gays before the Supreme Court this week, and then review the baseless and vile accusations against gays by the Evangelical leaders that spoke out in DC this week, most Christians should hang their head in shame. Many of them used verbatim quotes from the people who killed Bonhoeffer, even as they claimed him as their exemplar.Look, if the Court rules in favor of gays this June no one is coming to kick in the doors of Evangelical families. No one is being drug off to camps. A lot of very happy souls are going to be happily planning their weddings. I don't see a lot of martyrdom in that.
