Where does the hate truly come from?

If I were to claim religion were the biggest contributor to homophobic attitudes, I feel I would only be scratching the surface. Something tells me it runs way deeper than this, but I can't fully put my finger on it.For example: people ignore most of the bible, yet become absolutely loud and livid when it comes to homosexuality. What makes them ignore the parts about mixed cloth, pre-martial sex, and almost every other aspect of scripture? The part about marrying your rapist and the rapist giving the father silver never comes up. Stoning women who commit adultery never comes up. Why?Why does "homosexuality is a sin" jump out at them in such a personal way, yet they treat the rest of the bible as background noise? Why? Personal repulsion? As if they have a "Everything that upsets me should be illegal" mentality? What are your thoughts?
