How common is it really for queer people to have some idea of their sexuality as children?

It seems like the standard gay/lesbian narrative includes people knowing as long as they can remember that they were somehow "different", but I'm curious as to how common that is in practice. I'm pan now, but as a kid all my "crushes" were on girls because I just thought that's what's done and never even considered anything different. I was quite effeminate in other ways and a lot of my friends were girls, so I got called various slurs in elementary school, but the thought that I might actually be something other than straight didn't even cross my mind until I was 14.
