How to work towards fixing this?

So I live in the United States and recently found out that the state I live in most of the year offers no protections to LGBT people against discrimination and that anyone can be fired for no reason whatsoever. While I know SCOTUS will be ruling regarding marriage equality soon, but an not certain that it will protect anyone from such discrimination. Additionally, in a state where you can be fired for nothing, I'm not sure that anti-discriminatory laws will help much anyway. I love the state I live in, but don't feel like I can stay if this continues. Does anyone have any ideas regarding being proactive about fixing this?
