GSA Club Experience
This was a year ago, but I'll tell it anyways. My new school happened to have a Gay-Straight Alliance club that I signed up for right away. I was really quiet in there, because I was shy and felt out of place. I did get everyone's number so we could keep in contact for events, so that was a plus. We had a banner at lunch that a TON of people signed, and a lot of people were wearing rainbow ribbons. I found all that beautiful, and spoke up a bit in cub.I tried to spread the word, but mostly the other kids would look at me funny and say they weren't gay. I told them they didn't have to be, that's why it's an alliance. None of what I said helped, and the members stopped showing up often. Then we were informed there was a small parade happening at the school, so everyone dashed to Zachary's house to help build a gay pride float. I only stayed for two hours and there was mostly messing around and pizza instead of working, but it looked great in the end. Zach's pickup truck had rainbow handprints on it (which we learned never came off), streamers, and a rainbow duct tape flag we traded back and forth. And my favorite, the glitter cannon. I'm still finding glitter in my purse today. We walked beside that float as he set off party poppers, and it was wonderful. Especially when it was my turn for the flag, I waved it proudly as other members threw candy to children. I passed my best friend, and she said she was so proud of me. I was too.Sadly, the club did not have any more meetings the last three months of school due to lack of participation. I came to almost every meeting and tried so hard to help, but in the end it didn't matter. The planned 5K never happened. But when I look back on everything that happened, it was great. We met a FTM, gave out anonymous valentines, a girl gave me one and called me "cutie", and we did research on gay marriage rights.I'm really hoping that this year the club will be back, and I will do whatever it takes to make it stay.
